The TreeTag

At just 3.5” long and a few ounces, the TreeTag provides comprehensive monitoring with a dendrometer for radial growth, an accelerometer for stability, and sensors for temperature and humidity. Data is wirelessly transmitted to a gateway up to several miles away, offering near real-time access. Powered by a solar panel and hybrid capacitor, TreeTags are low-maintenance, environmentally sustainable, and designed to operate for over a decade, even under dense canopies.

TreeTag Data

Each TreeTag is equipped with a dendrometer to measure radial growth, offering direct insights into plant health and water status. Complementary sensors on the device include a three-axis accelerometer for monitoring stability, a thermometer, and hygrometer to assess the local environment. Together, these sensors enable a comprehensive understanding of tree physiology and external conditions, helping managers and researchers make informed decisions.

The Data Portal

The Data Portal offers advanced functionality for managing and analyzing your plant data. View a detailed list of your plants and associated TreeTags, organize them into custom groups, and monitor sensor connectivity and battery strength. With simple tools, generate visualizations and download historical sensor data for specified periods for further analysis. For instance, users can graph or export data from specific sensors across multiple plants over defined intervals, enhancing decision-making capabilities.

Installation and Mounting Location

Installing a TreeTag is quick and easy, taking less than five minutes per tree. The device is mounted by drilling a 1.5” (4 cm) hole and securing it with the provided mounting screw. Placement depends on your data needs—mounting on a branch captures localized canopy effects, while trunk placement reflects overall canopy conditions. Each order includes complete, easy-to-follow installation instructions.

The ePlant App

The ePlant app is used for installing and managing TreeTags. During setup, the app activates each TreeTag, logs the location, and verifies proper functionality. Users can view live sensor readings, check connectivity, and control data collection through an intuitive interface. Regular updates ensure compatibility and new features, enhancing the app’s utility over time.

Networking

The TreeTag supports the US915 and EU868 LoRaWAN standards, and is capable of transmitting data over 1-3 miles, depending on terrain and obstructions. The system ensures consistent data delivery while storing up to 8 year’s worth of data on the TreeTag in case of outages. The sample rate and uplink rate are configurable, with the default rates being to sample every five minutes and uplink every 20 minutes. TreeTags can connect to any standard LoRaWAN network; if no such network is available, ePlant can provide all the gateways and other equipment necessary to quickly set up a proprietary network. A single gateway can handle thousands of TreeTags simultaneously.

The Gateway

TreeTags can connect to any standard LoRaWAN network, but ePlant offers pre-configured indoor and outdoor gateways that ensure seamless connectivity for TreeTags. These gateways need a power source and an internet connection, which can be provided through Ethernet or cellular networks. Designed for scalability, each gateway can manage data from thousands of TreeTags, facilitating reliable and efficient communication in a variety of deployment environments.

Designed for Tree & Vines

TreeTags are designed for flexibility, mounting easily onto any tree or woody vine. Optimal mounting is on trunks or branches with a diameter exceeding 1.0” (2.5 cm), ensuring accurate readings from the dendrometer and a secure installation. While smaller diameters are possible, careful consideration of tissue disruption and aesthetics is necessary. This adaptability allows for a wide range of applications, from urban forestry to agricultural settings.
